The era of sleepwear and loungewear for women is relatively recent. Earlier, in the period before the industrial revolution, nightwear was made exclusively for men. During the Victorian era, nightwear for women was seen more as an affluent's luxury than anything else. With men being at war and running their households, women were expected to stay back home and take care of everything else. This indicated the fact that they do not need an exclusive set of nightwear or loungewear.
